MUFON Field Investigators are the heart and soul of our organization. To become a MUFON Field Investigator, you must be at least 18 years of age, be able to acceptably pass a personal background check, and be willing to execute and agree to a MUFON non-disclosure agreement.
MUFON Canada Field Investigators are responsible for investigating UFO/UAP sighting reports assigned to them through MUFON’s Case Management System (CMS). Investigations generally involve reviewing the information and evidence submitted with the case, communicating with witnesses, conducting appropriate research and analysis, documenting investigative findings, and completing the required case report.
Most investigations can be conducted remotely through telephone, email, video calls, online research, and the analysis of photographs, videos, documents, and other available evidence. When the circumstances of a particular case warrant additional field investigation, an investigator may determine that an on-site visit, in-person witness interview, photography of the location, or collection of relevant evidence would be useful. Such activities are conducted when appropriate to the individual case and are not a requirement for every investigation.
MUFON Field Investigators are therefore not “UFO hunters.” Their primary role is to gather and objectively evaluate information and evidence in order to determine, whenever possible, the nature of a reported observation. Because of the unusual nature of some UFO/UAP reports, investigators may occasionally encounter circumstances requiring additional investigative procedures. MUFON’s Field Investigator training provides investigators with the knowledge and tools necessary to approach these situations professionally, objectively, and methodically. This training also helps MUFON Canada investigators appropriately evaluate and categorize the cases assigned to them.
In order to provide a solid foundation for Field Investigators, candidates are required to obtain the MUFON Field Investigator’s Manual and become familiar with its content. The Field Investigator’s Manual is approximately 300 pages and covers a wide range of investigative procedures and situations. Every Field Investigator candidate must study the material and successfully complete the required examination.
THE TEST MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN ONE YEAR with a score of at least 80%. In the event of a failed attempt, the student is entitled to two additional attempts. If all three attempts are unsuccessful, a six-month waiting period will apply before the student may attempt the final examination again. Upon successfully completing the required examination and other applicable requirements, the candidate may proceed toward MUFON Field Investigator certification.
